PPL News & Events
More than 140 financiers, clean energy experts and representatives of financial institutions from across Africa and overseas participated in the Forum. Because the business competition was hard fought between 9 projects, first time in the history of CTI-PFAN events, 2 projects were identified as winners which one of the two winning projects was the 8MW Kakaka mini hydropower project in western Uganda, promoted by a Ugandan-registered company, Greenewus Energy Africa Ltd. The other winner was from Barefoot Power Company which distributes lights and products to rural poor. Barefoot Power has reached over 100,000 households globally with clean, efficient lighting and phone charging systems, with the majority of these in Africa. Soil project from Ghana with a Jatropha bio-diesel project and a Biomass Gasifciation to Power project using waste corn cobs from Dalin Yebo in South Africa were the 2 runners up awarded at the forum. The 4 awarded projects represent a total of 120.000 tonnes of CO2 reduction per annum.

PPL was responsible for coaching and mentoring the Barefoot Power Project which was one of the winners. PPL also coached a number of the other shortlisted projects.

Projects participating in the business plan competition represented a total investment value of USD 110 million, and included:

"We are delighted to see the effects of our helping PPL to fund the expansion of CTI PFAN to Mozambique and Uganda,” noted John Gormley, Ireland's Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, who made a video address to the AFRICEF gathering, “matching up clean energy project developers from these countries with potential investors injects life to projects that might otherwise have little chance of raising equity." Through REEEP the Irish Government was one of the main Sponsors of AFRICEF.

This is the first African Clean Energy Investor Forum. Increasing the market for clean energy is a critical component to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Africa. The second Forum is to be hosting either end of 2011 or beginning of 2012. PPL is now open for new project proposal. Click on the resources for further guidelines.

2010 CTI PFAN Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing

During 2010 PPL organized on behalf of CTI PFAN the very first Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing. This involved a continent wide call for proposals, shortlisting of 16 projects, organization of project development workshops in Kampala, Maputo and Johannesburg,one-on-one coaching and culminated in the Forum event itself in Johannesburg on 15th September. Nine clean energy projects that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Africa by ca. 500,000 metric tons a year, the equivalent of taking 85,000 cars off the road annually, were presented to investors on the 15th September 2010 in Johannesburg at the Forum. .
